Basilio Esteban Villaruz & Leonila J. Bondoy, (eds.). Dance in Revolution, Revolution in Dance. 1999. World Dance Alliance-Philippines

Matthew M. Santamaria

Abstract:

After reading this volume, one's view of the discipline of dance may indeed undergo, adopting that crucial word in the title, a revolution. Folk dances such as the Singkil and the Tinikling may lose their purely aesthetic innocence; ballet may be seen as arena of contestation; and, dance education may be treated as a discourse.

Dance in Revolution, Revolution in Dance is a collection of articles presented by 19 Filipino and 13 foreign practitioners and scholars 6f dance, music, literature and other fields at the 1998 Manila Conference of the World Dance Alliance. The articles dissect the discipline of dance in the following contexts: dance and society, dance across cultures, dance history, dance education, dance and music, dance production and performance and, dance and gender. As a whole, this volume exhibits a strong emphasis on analyzing dance not simply as art but also as "social representation and phenomenon."
