“One PacMan, Four Biographies”

Joaquin L. Gonzalez Iii | Angelo Michael F. Merino

Abstract:

AT FIRST THERE WAS JUST ONE…

In our search for textbooks to use in our Philippine boxing classes at the University of San Francisco, we came across not one but three books (and one comic magazine) on Congressman-boxer Manny Pacquiao—the world’s best pound-for-pound boxer. All three titles on his colorful life inside and outside the ring were simultaneously released within 2010. We were excited to have our student-boxers read them as Pacquiao’s record stands solitary and high on top of professional boxing’s apex—major world title belts in eight different weight divisions. Only the flamboyant Golden Boy, Oscar de la Hoya, comes close with six. It will be very difficult to find a successor who will equal, or even surpass this unbelievable feat. Not even undefeated and quintuple world champion Pretty Boy Floyd Mayweather will be able to catch up with Pacquiao’s phenomenal ring accomplishments.
