Abstract:

To find out whether hot environmental condition can cause oxidative stress in the healthy Marwari goat of arid tract in India, blood samples were collected to harvest the serum when environmental conditions were moderate (maximum temperature of 28oC) and hot (maximum temperature of 46oC). The presence of oxidative stress was assessed on the basis of levels of serum enzymes (catalase, monoamine oxidase, glutathione reductase, superoxide dismutase, oxidase, peroxidase and xanthine oxidase) and serum antioxidants (Vitamin C, Vitamin E and glutathione). The mean value of each parameter obtained during moderate environmental condition was considered as control value and each mean value obtained during hot environmental condition was compared with the respective control. Serum catalase, monoamine oxidase, glutathione reductase, superoxide dismutase, oxidase, peroxidase and xanthine oxidase activities increased significantly (P_0.05), whereas serum Vitamin C, Vitamin E and glutathione activities decreased significantly (P_0.05) during hot environmental condition as compared to moderate condition. It was concluded that hot environmental condition can produce oxidative stress in Marwari goats by modulation of physiological mechanisms in response to heat stress.
