Abstract:

The surge protection in any electrical system is one of the most important things that should be considered in the analysis of a power system. This research focused on the internal factors of the electrical system, which have different elements and parameters that possibly affect the other electrical loads connected to the system like capacitance and inductance. These store energy in the electric field and magnetic field in an electrical system. They generate undesirable effects on other connected loads. System voltage and current increase in magnitude whenever loads are turned on or off which possess these properties.

The principal objective of the study was to design a portable surge protector device for a single-phase electrical system. It is very important to protect household appliances from surge in the electrical system in order to prolong their use. Electrical loads like Personal Computers (PC), Digital Video Disk (DVD), power components, Television sets and other devices should be energized in such a way that they work properly and avoid any damage when they are in use.

In this study, the interfacing of hardware to laptop computer was accomplished to show the indicated readings that were taken from the instruments. The software of the instrument was important in retrieving the data stored in the memory of the instrument. The data were very useful in the analysis of surge. The concept in the design was based on the parameters, system voltage, and current in the electrical system. The capacity of the device obtained was based on the requirement of the loads.

A quantitative approach was appropriate to obtain the design requirements. These included design of equipment like transformer, parameters and metallic oxide varistor.
