Creation Myth and the Filipino Psyche: An Exploration

Roseann R. Tan

Discipline: Literature

Abstract:

The paper argues that stories are powerful media for understanding characteristics of a people. As an example, the author presents the Bukidnon creation myth and attempts at an exploratory interpretation. Based on this interpretation the author describes how this particular myth reveals creative transformations that can occur on the intrapsychic and interpersonal levels. The author concludes by saying that myths do not only reveal knowledge about the collective psyche of a people, but that we should use this knowledge to create wholeness in the individual and in the society (Eds.).
