English Grammar Instruction among Multilinguals: Teachers’ Beliefs and Difficulties

Wilmarie S. Francisco | Mary Katherine M. Pabraquel

Abstract:

Grammar instruction can be considered as an important, but challenging task for language teachers, and the way they approach it may be influenced by their beliefs. Thus, a study on this is considered expedient. In this study, the beliefs in and difficulties with grammar instruction were investigated from English teachers' viewpoint. Using a descriptive-quantitative research design, the data were gathered using survey from 108 purposively selected participants, with the age range of 21-60 (mean age = 31.38, standard deviation = 9.43). Findings of this study indicated that respondents have a 'very positive' belief in grammar instruction, and that there was no significant difference in the respondents’ beliefs when grouped according to gender. However, it ascertained that the respondents' beliefs varied in terms of the level they teach. The study also discussed the difficulties faced by the respondents related to grammar instruction.
