Unionism in a Selected University: Points of Conflict and Resolutions

Sonia D. Daquila

Discipline: social sciences (non-specific)

Abstract:

Unionism has been the subject of many labor cases and research, but there is a dearth of studies that focus on the conflicting points and the heightening of tension in the context of educational institutions. To fill in this gap, the researcher chose a university that figured in a long-drawn strike to identify the conflict points, the heightening of conflict, how it was resolved, and what lessons the university learned from it. The researcher chose the phenomenological approach because the study is about the lived experiences of the participants. Data were drawn from judicial decisions and verified from the one-on-one interview with the key informants (KIs). Three from the former school officials and three from the previous union members. Mapping shows the conflict points and the stages in the escalation of tension. It shows that the conflict started with economic disagreements. A collective bargaining agreement was not forged, a stalemate took place, and the union held a strike that lasted for ten years. The management won. The union leaders and some active members were dismissed, but it left an unpleasant history for the university. An analysis of these events could be a source of valuable lessons for conflict management and for other institutions.
