Fallen Leaves: Challenges Behind Unfulfilled Criminologist Licensure Aspirants And Their Coping Mechanisms
Darwin B. Abella
Discipline: social sciences (non-specific)
Abstract:
The study explores the lived experiences of 15 individuals who did not pass the Criminology Licensure Examination (CLE). Using a qualitative descriptive phenomenology approach, the research delves into the emotional, social, financial, and academic challenges these "fallen leaves" face following their failure. The study integrates Kübler-Ross's Five Stages of Grief Theory and Lazarus and Folkman's Stress and Coping Theory to understand the respondents' emotional responses, cognitive adjustments, and behavioral changes. The findings highlight themes such as shock, sadness, anxiety, and social withdrawal, emphasizing the profound personal impact of failing the CLE. Respondents also struggled with financial strain, inadequate academic preparation, and social stigma. However, they employed various coping mechanisms, including emotional support from family and friends, faith and prayer, physical activity, and financial strategies. By revealing the untold stories and challenges of CLE non-passers, the study aims to inform educational policies and support systems to enhance the resilience and success of future licensure candidates.
