Abstract:
The study was conducted at Doña Aurora National High School to assess the factors affecting the Body Mass Index of Junior High School students who were wasted among 125 purposively selected students from various grade levels. The study utilized a descriptive design, revealing significant concerns regarding their health and lifestyle habits. The majority of respondents were found to be overweight, with 13 considered obese, accounting for 5.59% of the school's total population for the 2023-2024 academic year. The study also highlighted concerning dietary habits, with 57.60% of respondents sometimes having breakfast and 32.80% frequently having it. However, 28.80% reported having less than three meals daily, indicating a potential nutritional gap. Snacking was prevalent, with 76.00% of respondents reporting daily snack consumption. Fast food intake was typical, with 84.00% reporting occasional consumption. Sweets and carbonated drinks were also consumed frequently. Regarding lifestyle factors, many respondents spent more than two hours on screens, and eating while watching TV was a common practice. While 76.00% of the respondents engaged in exercise, 24.00% reported no exercise at all. Most students relied on motorized transportation to school, with only a small percentage walking. The study also revealed the presence of obesity-related health issues, such as hypertension, diabetes, bone problems, and depression. Based on these findings, an intervention program was proposed to address the issues of poor nutrition, unhealthy habits, inactive behavior, and obesity among junior high school students. The program aims to promote healthier dietary choices, increase physical activity, and raise awareness of the associated health risks.
