Abstract:

Happiness is recognized as a fundamental human objective of the Sustainable Development Goals and is tied to quality education and well-being. A happy school makes pupils attend school with more interest. However, the lack of happiness in schools is a major problem in many education systems. This research aimed to assess the level of happiness of the Grade School pupils of Divine Word College of Bangued (DWCB) in terms of relationship, teaching-learning process, and physical environment and atmosphere. The study used a descriptive survey method of research using a 20-item Happy Index Survey questionnaire adopted from DepEd Region 1. Total enumeration was employed comprising 210 Grade School pupils of DWCB for the School Year 2023-2024. This study found that the respondents have a very high level of happiness. The level of happiness along with relationship is influenced by continuous guidance from friendly and kind teachers and parents. Teachers’ readiness to accommodate pupils’ clarifications, providing additional examples, and sufficient application of the lessons are sources of pupils’ happiness in the teaching-learning process. Along physical environment and atmosphere, the respondents appreciate the kindness of their school head and other school personnel. Despite their weaknesses and deficiencies, they are still happy because they feel a welcoming atmosphere. Further, it was found that pupils’ happiness is relative to their grade level as their level of happiness significantly differs. Their involvement in different organizations makes them enjoy the company of their schoolmates. Closer coordination among the stakeholders in implementing the proposed output and reviewing school programs and policies is recommended to sustain the very high level of pupils’ happiness.
