Abstract:
This study explored the relationships among nurses’ level of job stress, extent of caring behavior, and levels of patient satisfaction. It aimed to determine the level of job stress and extent of caring behavior as perceived by nurses, and the relationship these have with assessed levels of patient satisfaction. Eighteen (18) nurses and forty-four (44) patients were selected as respondents at Immaculate Conception Hospital in Baybay City, Leyte. Nurses were asked about their perceived level of job stress using the Expanded Nurse Stress Scale (ENSS) and the extent of their caring behavior using the Caring Dimension Inventory-25 (CDI-25). Patients were also asked to rate their level of satisfaction with the nursing care received using the Patient Satisfaction Instrument (PSI). Findings show that nurses experience moderate levels of job stress which are directly related to workload, patients and their families, and death and dying. Nurses exhibit caring behavior during patient care very often, and patients are satisfied with the delivery of nursing care. Furthermore, as job stress levels of nurses increase, caring behavior exhibited during patient care decreases. Finally, the level of satisfaction of patients with the delivery of care increases when the extent of caring behavior exhibited by nurses during patient care increases.
