Thriving in the New Normal: Metacognitive Strategy Awareness and Reading Comprehension for Sustainable Quality Education

Abstract:

This study explores the relationship between metacognitive strategy awareness and reading comprehension among College of Teacher Education students at Apayao State College, addressing disparities in comprehension influenced by strategic approaches. With a focus on SDG 4: Quality Education, the research aims to enhance understanding of how metacognitive strategies can be leveraged to improve literacy outcomes in higher education, particularly within the context of global education challenges. It employs a descriptive-correlational design and stratified random sampling, utilizing a reading comprehension test and the Survey of Reading Strategies questionnaire. Findings reveal that problem solving strategies are the most prevalent metacognitive tools, significantly enhancing students' reading comprehension. However, disparities in comprehension levels—particularly between literal and interpretative understanding—were identified across different campuses and courses. The study highlights correlations between students' metacognitive strategy use, reading habits, and their demographic and socio-economic backgrounds. Despite adequate access to learning materials, poor reading habits persist, particularly in applied comprehension. The research advocates for integrating metacognitive strategies into language curricula, revising course syllabi, and implementing reading improvement programs that also incorporate cultural heritage education, contributing to a more holistic approach to literacy development. This study offers valuable insights into the role of metacognitive awareness in enhancing reading comprehension, with implications for improving educational practices both locally and globally. Future research should explore these dynamics across diverse courses and educational settings to further the goals of sustainable and equitable education.
