Lived Experiences of Juvenile Delinquent’s Reentry in the Community

Rhea Mae J. Tabunyag

Discipline: Childhood and Youth Studies

Abstract:

Juvenile delinquency is a major social issue, and it is the most complex issue that various countries must address. Numerous studies on the causes of delinquency have been conducted, but little research on the lived experiences of youth offenders during their reintegration in the community has been conducted; juvenile reintegration is a critical concern. Thus, this study was conducted to find out the experiences of the juvenile delinquents in the community specifically in the different barangay of Tangub City Misamis Occidental. A total of five (5) juvenile delinquents reintegrated were interviewed as informants of the study. A phenomenology with Colaizzi's method of data analysis was used in this study, data were collected through a research-made questionnaire. This study revealed five (5) cluster themes: the major driving force of delinquency, reintegration in society, social support received, I have grown and changed, and rebuilding my life. According to the data gathered, a major driving force urged these individuals to commit. During their reintegration, former juvenile delinquents experience anxiety and fear, selfisolation, feeling outcast from the community, and inability to find work are also challenges they face. To rebuild themselves, in order to improve their employment prospects and grow from their past errors, they wanted to pursue a degree. Juvenile delinquents encountered various challenges during their reintegration into the community. Integrating intervention and counseling programs would aid in mitigating the negative experiences of juvenile delinquents.
