Abstract:

Disasters are an unavoidable reality, particularly in a tropical country like the Philippines, which is highly susceptible to natural calamities such as floods, earthquakes, and fires. The ability of communities to prepare for, respond to, and recover from such events plays a crucial role in minimizing casualties and damages. This study explores the level of emergency preparedness among selected barangays in Zamboanga City that are prone to disasters such as floods, fires, and earthquakes. It examines residents' awareness, available resources, and emergency response capabilities. The study aims to provide insights to strengthen local disaster response strategies and policies. Using a descriptive research design and survey method, data was collected from Barangay Guiwan, Tumaga, and Tugbungan—areas known to be vulnerable to various natural hazards. Findings indicate that while some disaster preparedness measures are in place, many residents remain slightly aware or completely unaware of crucial emergency guidelines. Additionally, gaps in resource allocation, training, and public awareness hinder effective crisis response. This study highlights the need for enhanced disaster preparedness programs, improved access to emergency resources, and greater engagement from local government units (LGUs) to build a resilient, disaster-ready community. The insights from this research aim to support policymakers, barangay officials, and future researchers in strengthening emergency preparedness efforts, ensuring that communities are better equipped to manage disasters and mitigate risks in the long run.
