Pedagogy of The Novice: The Phenomenological Narratives of The Beginning Classroom Teachers Teaching in Higher Education Institutions

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to gain understanding and insight based on the lived experiences with regard to the rudiments and circumstances surrounding the pedagogical experiences of the beginning teachers teaching in the higher education. This research aims also at exploring regarding how the beginning teachers in the higher education navigate all the task from their primary role as classroom instructors to the varied auxiliary services given to them. In order to achieve this purpose, interviews were conducted to the participants in some selected higher education institutions. This phenomenological study is guided with the objectives that inquiry guided with the objectives: explore the lived experiences of the of the beginning teacher teaching in higher education institution. Nine participants formed the purposive sample; the major data collection tool was semi-structured interview. Forty-five to 60-minute interviews were conducted with each participant. Findings revealed that the participants have given emphasis that possessing the needed knowledge in the subject matter is the most important in higher education teaching. The participants have expressly described that respect in cultural diversity is important in classroom teaching. In the exploration of the psychodynamics in the workplace, the participants have highlighted maintaining good relationship with the co-workers. The participants have generally revealed that they have good level of self-confidence when they started teaching. Participants have also revealed that they prefer to seek guidance from their peers than to the senior faculty. Managing the time in the workplace and spending adequate time to prepare the lessons are among the behavior that have sustained them in higher education teaching.
