Abstract:

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of interactive drills in enhancing the oral communication skills of TVL Grade 12 students and to craft an intervention plan. A mixed-method approach with an explanatory-sequential design was used, combining both quantitative and qualitative methods to provide a comprehensive understanding of the research topic. The results showed that students’ oral communication skills across four components — Clarity and Articulation, Content Organization, Use of Language, and Response to Questions — were “fair” at entry. However, after implementing interactive drills, the exit performance improved significantly, reaching a satisfactory level across all components. The statistical significance of these findings confirmed that the interactive exercises had a positive impact, significantly enhancing students' oral communication abilities. Students' experiences with the drills were classified into three primary themes: pronunciation and confidence challenges, comprehension and information organization difficulties, and engagement and motivation. The interactive drills allowed students to be more mindful of their language use while also preparing the 21st-century learners for real-life situations by providing opportunities to practice communication, which is vital for success and ultimately boosts their fluency and communication readiness. The use of interactive drills was very successful in improving the oral communication skills of Grade 12 TVL students, and these drills can be used in work immersion.
