Abstract:
The research aimed at establishing the level of usage and awareness of AI-assisted language learning technologies by postgraduate students in Abia State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional design was used in this study, and of the population of students, 870 students was selected as the sample size. A structured questionnaire was used in the collection of data regarding the level of awareness and actual usage of AI tools in Language Learning, and the data was analysed using awareness descriptive and inferential statistical methods. The study results reported that the level of awareness and utilization of AI language learning tools as directly proportional. The study found that students know about AI-powered learning tools, more significantly in uLesson video learning tutorials, educational chatbots, and text AI apps for language translation. However, the students, although ultimately aware, do not know of AI as a predictor of students’ performance and likely risk of dropping out of school. The research demonstrated that the PGS in Abia State utilize AI driven learning tools to gain certain soft skills to enhance their employability. There was a positive relationship between the awareness level and the use of AI language learning tools. The study encourages language educators and stakeholders in education to address gaps in PG learners' experiences through the integration of AI-assisted language tools and the preservation of training and support to assist PGS in Nigeria. The study also encourages AI language tool developers in Nigeria to invest attention in creating purpose-built AI language tools for PG learners in Nigeria.
