Abstract:

(English) This study examined the relationship between language learning motivation, academic writing proficiency, and writing difficulties among Grade 10 students in Filipino. It also tested the mediating role of academic writing proficiency in the relationship between language learning motivation and writing difficulty. A quantitative descriptive-correlational design was used, expanded through path analysis. The respondents included 130 Grade 10 students from a public school in Sta. Maria, Davao Occidental, Philippines, selected through simple random sampling. Data were gathered using a researcher-made questionnaire that measured language learning motivation, writing difficulty, and academic writing proficiency across the planning, writing, and revising stages. The mean, standard deviation, Pearson product-moment correlation, multiple regression, and path analysis were used for data analysis. Results showed a high level of language learning motivation (M = 3.69, SD = 0.44), a high level of reported writing difficulty (M = 3.47, SD = 0.59), and a high level of academic writing proficiency (M = 3.48, SD = 0.66). The relationships among motivation, academic writing proficiency, and writing difficulty were positive and significant, with coefficients ranging from r = 0.571 to r = 0.665, p < .01. In the path model, the direct coefficient from motivation to academic writing proficiency was 0.571, from academic writing proficiency to writing difficulty was 0.665, and from motivation to writing difficulty was 0.246 after incorporating academic writing proficiency into the model. The indirect effect through academic writing proficiency was 0.379, with a total effect of 0.625. The findings suggest that it is essential to integrate motivational support, explicit strategy use, and guided practice throughout the entire academic writing process when teaching Filipino. 1.
