Abstract:

Student engagement plays a crucial role in a student's holistic academic development. However, engagement has evidently affected students' academic performance in recent years. This action research examined both cognitive and affective engagement to improve academic performance, using the 3-D PhET Simulation intervention. Twenty-one (21) Grade 7 students participated in SEI assessments, pre-test, post-test, and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using the Student Engagement Instrument (SEI), pre- and post-test means and standard deviations, and LRMS evaluations, while qualitative responses were analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed improved academic performance due to the simulation's interactive nature. However, results from the SEI questionnaire showed that students' cognitive and affective engagement had remained average. Despite this, the 3-D PhET Simulation proved to be efficient as a non-print instructional material, most especially in teaching complex concepts, enhancing participation, critical thinking, and collaboration. By using interactive simulations, educators can enhance student engagement and academic achievement while aligning instruction with global education standards.
