Abstract:

Technology is essential in 21st-century education to address difficulties in recalling chemistry concepts in the Philippines, which ranked 3rd lowest in science among 81 countries in the 2022 PISA, partly attributed to low memory retention. This action research utilized mixed methods with pretest-posttest approach and qualitative interviews to determine the effectiveness of Memory Enhancing Technique (MET) using Quizizz in enhancing the memory retention of Grade 8 Chemistry students. Also, the participants were purposefully selected. The quantitative data were processed using the mean, standard deviation, and mean difference to determine differences in the level of memory retention of the students in chemistry before and after the implementation of MET using Quizizz. The qualitative data were analyzed through thematic and narrative analysis to present the implementation and development of MET using Quizizz. Results revealed that MET using Quizizz improved students' memory retention from very low to low levels with a mean difference of 5.19, while also enhancing motivation, excitement, and competition. However, challenges like poor internet connectivity, limited mobile device access, and classroom noise were reported. It is recommended to utilize and integrate technology such as Quizizz to improve memory retention in science. Factors to consider are language barriers and time duration.
