Reducción: Ang Pag-uwi Sa Diskurso ng Pananakop at Pakikipagtunggali

Abstract:

Ang pag-aaral na ito ay isang pagtatangkang pakahulugan sa reducción. Ang reducción ang isa sa mga pangunahing pamamaraan ng mga Espanyol upang maibigay sa mga Filipino ang Kristiyanismo na kabahagi ng kanilang pananakop. Nagsimula ang pag-aaral sa pagkilala ng mga naunang pag-aaral ditto ng mga historyador. Ang naunang nagbigay dito ng malalimang pansin ay ang historyador na si Reynaldo Ileto sa kanyang akdang inilimbag noong 1998. Sa kaniyang akda, sinuri ni Ileto ang mga dinamiko ng ugnayan sa mga tinatawag niyang larangan (realms). Isa pang akda ay ang kina Patricio Abinales at Donna Amoroso sa kanilang akdang nailimbag noong 2005. Sa akda namang ito, ipinakita kung paano naging paglalatag lamang ang reducción ng pagkakahati sa pagitan ng estado at lipunan sa Filipinas. Mula dito’y sinuri naman nitong akda ang diskurso o kaisipang bumabalot sa reducción, mula sa panig ng mga Espanyol at ng mga Filipino. Ginabayan ang akda ng mga sumusunod na tanong: Una, anong kaisipan ba ang nasa likod ng reducción?; ikalawa, paano bang nabuo ito kapuwa mula sa panig ng mga Espanyol at Filipino?; ikatlo, ano-anong saysay at kabuluhan ang matatagpuan sa mga ito? Upang masagot ang mga katanungan ay tiningnan ang leksikal na kahulugan ng reducción at ugat nitong reducir sa mga diksiyonaryong nagmumula sa mga Espanyol, kapanahon man o hindi. Isinunod ang pagtingin naman sa mundong pinagmulan nito sa Espanya at saka bumuo ng kahulugan nito sa mga Filipino. Mula dito ay nakitang “pag-uwi” ang katumbas nito kung kaya’t pumasok sa mundo ng kabuluhan nito sa kaisipang Filipino.

The study is an attempt to interpret reducción. Reducción is the primary method used by the Spaniards to convert the Filipinos to Christianity, an essential part of their conquest. The study started in the recognition of previous studies by historians on the matter. The first to give a serious study on the topic is the historian Reynaldo Ileto in a work published in 1998. In this work, Ileto analyzed the dynamics governing the relationships of people in what he termed as “realms.” Another work is that of Patricio Abinales and Donna Amoroso published in 2005. Reducción was seen in this work as simply the laying down of foundations for the eventual division between the state and society in the Philippines. Taking off from these, the present work studies reduccion from the perspective of discourse and mentality, both from the Spanish and Filipino point of view. The work was guided by the following questions: first, what is the mentality behind the reducción? Second, how was this mentality construed among the Spaniards and the Filipinos? Third, what meanings could be retrieved from all of these? In order to answer the questions, the study started with the lexical meanings of reducción/reducir from both contemporaneous and non-contemporaneous dictionaries. This was followed by an analysis of its world in the Spanish context and then its meaning among the Filipinos. From these, the Tagalog word “pag-uwi” was found to have been construed as its equivalent and thus the work attempted to work on its meaning in the Filipino mentality.
